Teaching Notes - Physical & Mental Agility in Wrestling

IMG_1424.jpg

Wrestling is a performance art like no other. Great wrestlers require the strength & body control of gymnasts, the mental acuity of martial artists, the graceful footwork of dancers and the improvisational skills of stand-up comedians.

With the ‘one take’ nature of wrestling shows, it’s essential that performers have the physical ability to change direction & body position in a split second, all while maintaining form & thinking clearly enough to know what’s coming next... even when things go wrong.

Training the body to be fluid and agile is therefore an important aspect of wrestling - but training the mind to be agile enough to deal with the ambiguity of improvised performance in the ring is equally essential.

Building on a discussion that came out of our first session in which we touched on the best ways to improve footwork and timing; this second session will introduce training drills, games and physical riddles that draw from dance and martial arts to help develop hand eye co-ordination, footwork and physical agility.

By playing with these complex movement patterns until they become unconscious, we will ultimately explore how it’s possible to create the mental space required to be able to make and process decisions in the moment - all while giving or taking a move.
